Ema

An empty space in the middle of a disparate development. A typical space in Slezská Ostrava, "without energy" but with "no order," surrounded by lots of greenery.  The proximity of Ostrava's most famous slag heap, Ema, and its smaller sister, Terezie, is a phenomenon.

The residential complex is designed as a transitional element between the low-rise development of family houses on the north side and apartment buildings on the south side.

The complex with 53 apartments is divided into three masses, which, together with the front gardens of the lower apartments and the recessed upper floor, create a composition spread across a distinctive terrain depression.

The complex is designed to be open and accessible, so that it does not create a barrier in the existing area and allows interaction between locals and newcomers. At the center of the residential complex is a semi-enclosed community courtyard designed to foster neighborly ties. Private spaces consist of front gardens for the lower apartments and roof terraces for the upper apartments.
